HARRISVILLE- A funeral service with military honors for Stanley T. Slate (Dick), 83, Co Rt 23, will be held 12:00 PM Saturday November 3rd at the Adirondack Funeral Home, Harrisville.
He died Wednesday morning at his home while under the care of his loving family and Lewis County Hospice. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Lewis County Hospice PO Box 266 Lowville, NY 13367. Online condolences may be made at www.adirondackfh.com.
Dick was born the Lewisburg area of the Town of Wilna on June 27, 1929 to Elmer Stanley and Maude Hubbard Slate. He attended school in Newton Falls. He joined the US Marines in 1945 and served in North Africa, New Guinea and aboard the USS Midway. He was honorably discharged in 1948. He was united in marriage to Bernice Mae Northrup on June 19, 1949 in Newton Falls. He was a coater operator at Newton Falls Paper Co. for 47 years, retiring in 1991.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Fine, NY. and a member of the East Pitcairn Wesleyan Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was involved in the construction of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and the Clifton Fine Central School.
He is survived by a son and daughter in law, Elmer Fred and Laurie Slate, Chaumont, and five daughters and four sons in law, Celia Eileen and Bruce Bango, Candy Jolane and David Sullivan and Estella Louise (Jo) and Lane Garrow all of Harrisville, Cynthia Karen and Stephen Davoy, Lowville, and Corrine Rose Slate, North Carolina. He also has 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is predeceased by four siblings, Derlyn Philip, Hermon George (Ted), Virginia Mae Barnhart, and Carol Marie Cross. He is also predeceased by a foster brother, Crandall”Tootsie” LaPlante.
