CASTORLAND- Ronald J. Zehr, 72, Naumburg Lane, died Saturday afternoon in the emergency room at Lewis County General Hospital after being stricken at camp.

His memorial service will be held Wednesday August 14th at 11 AM at the Croghan Mennonite Church. His burial will be private prior to the funeral in the church cemetery. Calling hours will be held Tuesday August 13th from 2-4 & 7-9 at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Adirondack Funeral Home, Croghan.

He was born in the Town of Croghan on October 8, 1940 to Earl and Norine Zehr. He attended Brewery Hill Country School and Beaver River Central School. After high school he worked on the family farm. He married Karleen Zehr September 10, 1966 at the Lowville Mennonite Church with Rev. Richard Zehr officiating. In 1969 he and his wife went into partnership with his parents on the farm. They purchased the farm in 1979 and operated it until retiring in 2007. He was a maple producer for many years.

He was a member of the Carthage Mennonite Church where he was very active. He served on the board of directors of the Lowville Farmers’ Coop, the Northern New York Maple Producers, the Northern New York Farmers Market and the Farm Bureau. He also volunteered for the Mennonite Disaster Service.

He was a Boston Red Sox fan, enjoyed making maple syrup, cutting wood, visiting with friends, spending time with family and hunting.  

He is survived by his wife Karleen, three daughters and a son, Zanetta and Kenneth Russell, Castorland, Katherine and John Gonsalves, Elkhart IN, Rhoda and Steve Christopherson, Glenfield, and Ronald Jr. and Tamara, Croghan. He has seven grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Howard and Linda, , Elsie Zehr  of Castorland, Mary Lou and Elon Waugh, Kenneth and Berneda, and Myron and LuAnn all of Croghan and Velma and Patrick LaComb, Beaver Falls. He also has a sister-in-law, Gloria Zehr, Castorland.

He is predeceased by his parents, a brother Earl Robert and a brother-in-law Jonathan Zehr.

Lee and I are so saddened by the news. Ron was such a great friend and supporter of Farm Burau and all the community. I wish I could attend the calling hours, however we are out of town and can not get back. Please know how much all staff and leaders of Farm Bureau will miss Ron. Ron was alsways thinkngof how he could help others. He will be so missed.
